Floating offshore wind project

The South Brittany coastline has been identified as a particularly favourable area for the development of floating offshore wind. Off the coast of Groix and Belle-Ile-en-Mer, Océole is looking into developing the region’s first 250MW floating offshore project.

The project would include up to twenty floating wind turbines, their anchoring and electrical cables systems, connected to an offshore electrical substation and grid connection system led by the French Transmission System Operator RTE.

What is floating offshore wind?

Most offshore wind turbines today are fixed to the seabed, so-called bottom-fixed, and in more shallow waters. The next generation of turbines are designed to float in the water allowing development further out to sea where winds are stronger, but the water depths make bottom-fixed designs uneconomic.
